[Mini Biography from Old Official Magma Webpage]
Allan Steel, BA (Hons, University Medal, Sydney), PhD (Sydney), joined the Magma group in 1989.
He has developed many of the fundamental data structures and algorithms in Magma for multiprecision integers, finite fields, matrices, polynomials and Gröbner bases. He has also developed the memory manager, the environmental features (line editor, help system, etc.), and the package system, and has also worked on the Magma language interpreter. In collaboration, he has developed the code for lattice theory (with Bernd Souvignier), invariant theory (with Gregor Kemper) and module theory (with Jon Carlson and Derek Holt). One of his main research goals is to develop fast practical implementations of asymptotically-fast algorithms.
