  • Constructing Ordinary Representations of Finite Groups via Extension
  • 3pm–4pm, Monday 6th March, 2017
  • Carslaw 535A
  • I will describe a practical algorithm for the construction of an ordinary representation of a finite group G via the extension of an existing representation defined on a proper subgroup of G. I will also describe how, using an implementation of this algorithm within Magma, I was able to construct (for the first time ever) explicit minimal-degree ordinary representations of several of the large sporadic finite simple groups, such as the Baby Monster.
