  • Computations in the p-adics and their extensions is important for many reasons, including most recently point counting algorithms for elliptic curves. I will briefly outline the theory behind the p-adics, motivate their use, and then give an overview of the algorithms and tricks underlying Magma's new implementation of the p-adics.
